New barrage needed on Kosi River to save Bihar from flood menace: Samrat

Patna, Sep 30 (Reporter) Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary said that a new barrage must be constructed on the river Kosi to save the state from the floods. Samrat, who called on Union Jalshakti minister CR Patil in New Delhi on Monday, requested him to construct a high-capacity barrage in the Indian territory on the river. Samrat said that the barrage constructed in the Nepal region in 1962 had a life span of only 25 years, but now it is 62 years old, and hence a new high-capacity barrage in the Indian territory was the need of the hour. Apprising the Union Minister with the latest updates regarding floods due to heavy discharge in rivers, namely Kosi, Bhagmati, Gandak, and other rivers of North Bihar, he said that the water level of river Kosi increased beyond expectation due to discharge from the barrage constructed in Nepal. He said that due to heavy water flow, the lives of the common people were in danger in 20 districts. Chaudhary said that the state government was trying to control the situation with the help of the officers and the engineers. Still, the people were scared and wanted a permanent solution to the flood menace. Construction of a barrage on the Kosi River in Indian territory would not only solve the flood problem but would also help in other activities like hydroelectric power generation, fishing, irrigation, and tourism...////...
