Newly elected Arunachal legislators take oath in Assembly

Itanagar, June 14 (Reporter) The newly elected members of the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly took oath in the first session of the 8th Legislative Assembly which began here on Friday for a two-day sitting. The new legislators were administered the oath of affirmation by Pro-tem Speaker Ninong Ering. He first called in Chief Minister Pema Khandu to take the oath followed by Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein, the Cabinet Ministers and then the other legislators. Altogether 11 lawmakers, including Minister Ojing Tasing took the oath in Hindi and others in English. Earlier, as soon as the House assembled for the proceedings, the Pro-tem Speaker welcomed all the newly elected leaders on joining the 'temple of democracy' after declaration of the Assembly election results. “I wish, you all as people’s representatives will fulfill your responsibilities diligently and maintain the democratic values in and outside the House,” the Pro-tem Speaker said, while suggesting that their deliberations & debates during the house sessions should be good. "We are meeting here for the first time after the polls and we will have to come with high thoughts in this assembly," the former Union Minister said. In the 60-member House, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has 46 members, the National People’s Party (NPP) has five members, three members are from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), two from the People’s Party of Arunachal (PPA), one from the Indian National Congress and three Independents. There are 20 new faces in the Assembly. Talking about the women representation, Ering, who was sworn-in as the Pro-tem Speaker by Governor Lt General (Retd) KT Parnaik on Thursday, said, "Nari Shakti (women power) is fully visible among us. There are four women legislators." Meanwhile, senior BJP leaders, including former Deputy Speaker and MLA from Changlang North, Tesam Pongte and Kardo Nyigyor, MLA from Likabali constituency on Friday filed nominations for the posts of Speaker and Deputy Speaker, respectively. They, accompanied by fellow legislators and proposers Chau Zingnu Namchoom, Mutchu Mithi, Hayeng Mangfi, and Tsering Lhamu, submitted their papers to the Secretary, Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly, Kago Habung, after the close of first day's sitting of the House.
