Kendrapara (Odisha), July 10 (Reporter)The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought for an Action Taken Report (ATR) from the Bhadrak Superintendent of Police, on gross abuse of power by three police personnel of Chandbali Police Station.
The three policemen were seen dragging, beating and abusing a scheduled caste woman and her minor sister-in-law in a video, which went viral on social media .
Considering the petition filed by Human Rights Activist Radhakanta Tripathy, the NHRC passed the order on Monday directing the BhadraK SP to submit a report within four weeks.
The petitioner alleged that on June 25, last a woman was ruthlessly assaulted by the police officials in the premises of Chandabali PS in Odiaha’s Bhadrak District.
As per the complaint, the incident resulted when the kid of the woman was playing with the shoe cover during which the shoe cover fell in front of the police station.
Constable Ravi Shetty who was on duty asked the woman to pick up the same.When the woman refused to obey the order, she was slapped by the accused Constable Ravi.
Later two more constables joined and they started abusing and assaulting the woman and the incident went viral in social media.
The woman,Tripathy alleged, was pulled by her legs and thrown to the ground by the policemen. She was also assaulted with a plastic pipe.
The complainant has requested NHRC for an independent and impartial investigation into the incident with legal action against the accused police officials, psychosocial counselling and adequate compensation to the victim women etc.
The NHRC asked the Bhadrak SP to inquire the allegations by a senior police officer, not below the rank of an Additional SP, and ensure the needful action against the accused and to submit the action taken report to the Commission within four weeks.
