Chennai, Jan 28 (Reporter) In a major haul,officials of the Narcotics Intelligence Bureau-CID
(NIB-CID) have seized 93 kg of methaqualone worth Rs 23.25 crore and arrested two
persons in the city.
In a statement here on Sunday, Crime and Enforcement ADGP Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal
said the NIB-CID of Chennai Unit received a secret information regarding possession of
psychotropic substances and efforts to sell in grey market.
Based on this information, a special operation was launched and the NIB-CID team achieved
a major breakthrough and arrested one Neelamegam (50) of Tiruvottiyur in North Chennai and
seized 25 kgs of methaqualone, a white crystalline substance on Saturday.
The team also arrested another accused, Samsudeen (33) of Villivakkam area and seized
68 kg of methaqualone from his house, Mr Aggarwal said.
Preliminary examination with field test kit gave positive result for methaqualone, a
psychotropic substance under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic
Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.
The team has seized a total of 93 kgs methaqualone and arrested two accused.
The market value of the seized contraband is approximately Rs 23.25 crore and the
international value is multi-fold.
Mr Aggarwal said in addition, 97 kg of a white amorphous powder was also seized.
The nature of this powder was being ascertained through laboratory tests.
The NIB-CID have registered a case and efforts were on to unearth the entire chain
of accused involved in drug peddling, he added...////...
