Mumbai, Aug 22 (Reporter) A National Institution for Transforming India (NITI) Aayog report suggesting steps to make the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) a global financial centre was handed over to Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Thursday.
“NITI Aayog has focused on seven different sectors to double the gross domestic product (GDP) of Mumbai in five years," said Shinde.
A meeting of Niti Aayog officials was held at CM’s official residence where they made a presentation on the study.
Niti Aayog Chief Executive Officer B.V.R. Subrahmanyam said that NITI Aayog is preparing visions for 13 states.
He said that along with the development of the state, special attention is being paid to the economic development of the cities.
He said that NITI Aayog is working as a pilot project in four metropolises namely Mumbai Mahanagar area, Surat, Varanasi, Visakhapatnam.
In the study conducted by the NITI Aayog, the development objective of the areas including Palghar, Raigad, Thane districts and Mumbai metropolis has been kept in mind. Currently, the share in gross domestic product of this area is Rs 12 lakh crores ($140 billion), said the CEO.
There are currently about 1 crore jobs in Mumbai and NITI Aayog has mentioned that efforts will be made to create about 30 lakh more jobs.
For this, attention will be focused on seven development areas and efforts will be made to invest Rs 10 to 11 lakh crores in the private sector and emphasis will be placed on making growth engines for cities.
Saying that one-third of the entire Maharashtra's GDP comes from these five districts, some measures that can be considered include making global services hub in Mumbai, promoting affordable housing, making MMR area a global tourist centre, integrated development of ports in MMR and making industry and logistics hubs.
Shinde said on this occasion, Niti Aayog has planned for integrated development by taking advantage of the opportunity in the metropolitan area including Mumbai.
For this, the construction of affordable houses, emphasis on employment generation, giving preference to data centres in Navi Mumbai and the construction of Alibaug Multimodal Corridor are being accelerated...////...
