Shillong, Nov 18 (Reporter) Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Monday said that his National People’s Party (NPP) may support Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Manipur if there is a change in leadership.
On Sunday , the NPP, the second-largest party with seven MLAs in the 60-member Manipur Assembly, withdrew support from the N.Biren Singh-led government for its “complete failure” in resolving the crisis and restoring normalcy in the State.
“We have lost complete confidence under the current leadership of Biren Singh. It is difficult for the NPP to support the Biren Singh-led government. If we see a change in leadership and a positive step forward to resolve the conflict, we can constructively cooperate and contribute to ensuring that peace and normalcy return in Manipur,” Sangma said.
“Our decision (withdraw support) is about Biren Singh. So it is very specific to him and to the individual. Our MLAs and our party’s Manipur State Committee lost confidence in him and decided not to support his government,” he added.
Sangma, who is also the NPP national President, said that he has been discussing the Manipur conflict with BJP’s central leaders, including Union Home Minister Amit Singh and BJP President J.P. Nadda on the need to create confidence-building measures and make the people trust in the system again.
“However, the overall actions being taken are not reaching a logical conclusion because of the trust deficit. We have been stressing some trust-building measures for the government to be able to create an environment toward a positive result. This has not been done but we are still hopeful,” he said.
Voicing deep concern over the escalating unrest in Manipur, the Meghalaya Chief Minister said, “We have been seeing incidents of violence for more than a year in Manipur and now houses of MLAs have been vandalised and even physical attacks. We can understand the sentiments of the people of Manipur are very high and these kinds of actions though may not be a specific plan. But having said that we are hopeful that positive steps will be taken to see that peace and normalcy, law and order return in Manipur...////...
