Bhubaneswar, Feb 19 (Reporter) The Odisha Assembly was adjourned on Wednesday till 4 pm without transacting any business due to a ruckus inside the well of the House by opposition BJD and Congress members.
As soon as the House assembled for the day at 10:30 am to take up the Question Hour, BJD and Congress members, holding placards, trooped into the well of the House and shouted slogans against the government.
The BJD members raised slogans opposing the restructuring of Mission Shakti, while the Congress members protested against the rising cases of atrocities against women in the state.
Both BJD and Congress members rushed to the podium and continued shouting slogans, disrupting the proceedings of the House.
Speaker Surama Padhi tried to pacify the agitated opposition and requested them to return to their seats and cooperate with the proceedings. However, the opposition ignored the Speaker’s request and continued raising slogans.
Finding no other option, the Speaker adjourned the House till 4 PM without transacting any business.
As soon as the House was adjourned, BJD members, holding placards, went to the Gandhi statue inside the Assembly premises and sat on a dharna, demanding that the government stop the restructuring of Mission Shakti in the state.
BJD leaders Ranendra Pratap Swain and Arun Sahu accused the BJP government of attempting to saffronize Mission Shakti and restructuring it against the wishes of lakhs of women who have been serving the program for the last two decades.
They stated that thousands of Mission Shakti members have been on an indefinite dharna in front of the State Assembly for the past six days, opposing the government's move to restructure the program. However, the government has not taken any steps to engage in discussions with them to address their concerns.
Swain asserted that the BJD would continue its fight until the Mission Shakti women receive justice and criticized the government for showing no sympathy toward the agitating members, who have been spending sleepless nights on the streets in support of their demands.
He further stated that there was no justification for restructuring Mission Shakti and alleged that the BJP government was deliberately doing so for political gain...////...
