Odisha: Blistering heat wave claims 10 lives in Rourkela

Bhubaneswar, May 30 (Reporter) Intense heat wave sweeping across Odisha, more specifically in western parts of the state, has reportedly claimed ten lives in the steel city of Rourkela in Sundargarh district on Thursday. Rourkela Government Hospital (RGH) Director in charge Dr Sudharani Pradhan said, “the deaths occurred within a span of six hours on Thursday from 2 PM. All the deaths, she said, are reported to be unnatural in nature. The RGH Director said eight persons were reported dead by the hospital and two died while undergoing treatment in the hospital. This could be possible due to the sizzling heat wave sweeping in the state. The body temperature of the persons, who were alive by the time they arrived at RGH was very high from 103-104 degrees, which is very high given the weather condition. This could be the possible reason of the death,the Director said adding that the reason could be known after the post mortem conducted. The history of the patients who died could not be ascertained, she said. Few more people of the steel city are admitted to the hospital and undergoing treatment. The IMD had predicted that heat wave conditions are likely to prevail in most parts of Western Odisha for next few days and advised the people not to move out of their houses during the peak hours between 1100 hours to 1500 hours. The entire Western Odisha has virtually turned into a boiling cauldron as the day temperature rising above 45 degree Celsius,with the industrial belt of Jharsuguda,the neighbouring district of Sundargarh, becoming the most hottest place in the state with the mercury rising to a record 47 degree Celsius , the highest during the current season...////...
