Odisha CM proposes visiting central team for setting up a modern disaster management center at Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar, Nov 26 (Reporter) A seven-member Inter-Ministerial Central team that arrived here on November 24 to assess the damage caused by the cyclonic storm DANA on Tuesday called on Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and held discussion with him. During the meeting, the Chief Minister proposed the central team for setting up a modern disaster management centre in Bhubaneswar and sought the Centre’s assistance and support for it. During the discussion, the Chief Minister stressed the need for developing disaster resilient infrastructure to counter natural disasters in the state along with assistance to compensate for the damage. The Chief Minister told the visiting team that every year Odisha has been facing natural calamities like floods and cyclones resulting in extensive damage to infrastructure. Though the government has been able to save the lives of people extensive damage is being caused to infrastructure and huge amount of funds is being spent for its reconstruction. The Chief Minister stressed the laying of underground electric cable, construction of embankments, and creation of large-scale mangroves forest in coastal districts to counter the natural calamities. Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari said creating disaster resilient infrastructure can accelerate economic development of the state. The team led by Joint Secretary P K Ray of Union Home Ministry visited the worst affected districts of Bhadrak, Kendrapada and Blasore and assessed the damage, Chief Minister's office sources here said.
