Odisha: Curfew relaxed for four hours in trouble-torn Balasore

Balasore,Jun 20 (Reporter) The curfew clamped in the Balasore municipality area since midnight of Monday, following a violent group clash between the two communities, was relaxed for 4 hours from 7 AM till 11 AM on Thursday. The district administration relaxed the curfew to enable the residents of the town to buy vegetables and do necessary marketing of essential commodities. As shops and commercial establishments were opened, the people were seen in a buying spree to purchase their day today required items, mainly vegetables. The rate of most of the vegetables has gone skyrocketing in the town as the authority has sealed all the entry points to the town. Official sources claimed that no untoward incident was reported during the last 24 hours. The Internet service ,however,remained suspended and only those having lease lines are allowed to use the service. So far 45 people from both communities have been arrested and sent to judicial custody while around 50 people have been detained for violating the curfew guidelines. In addition to 34 platoons of Odisha State Armed Police Forces(OSAP), 6 companies of BSF have been deployed to maintain law and order situation in the town. The District collector claimed that the situation in the town is fast returning to normalcy. Leaders of all major political parties have appealed to the people to maintain peace and harmony and cooperate with the district administration. The town witnessed a group clash between the two communities on Monday last after some people noticed blood stained water in the drain and informed the police. Soon the incident took a violent turn leading to a face-off between the two groups and the pelting of stones in which some vehicles were damaged. The district administration,initially, clamped prohibitory orders under section 144 CrPc in the troubled areas but later was forced to impose a curfew in the night of Monday when the mob set fire to a shop, damaged houses and a religious structure...////...
