Balasore, Sept 28 (Reporter) Four pilgrims, including a woman, died, and 45 others were injured in a tragic road accident on National Highway 60 in Jaleswar late Friday night.
Police said on Saturday that the mishap occurred around 12:45 AM near Chalanti Chhak under the Jaleswar police station limits. A Puri-bound tourist bus carrying 57 passengers from Uttar Pradesh skidded off the road and fell into a field about 20 feet below.
All the injured were rushed to the local GK Bhattar Hospital, and 14 of them were later transferred to the District Headquarters Hospital, where they are receiving treatment in the surgery and orthopedic wards.
Reports indicate that most of the passengers were sleeping when the accident occurred. It is presumed that the driver lost control of the vehicle, leading to the tragic mishap.
While three people died on the spot, one succumbed to injuries while being transported to the District Headquarters Hospital, according to Additional District Magistrate Sudhakar Nayak.
He mentioned that arrangements are being made to send the pilgrims back to their homes. The group was traveling to Puri for Lord Jagannath's darshan.
The passengers were rescued from the overturned bus after the driver's door was cut open by fire brigade and police personnel.
The driver, helper, and travel agent have been detained at the Jaleswar police station, and further investigation is underway...////...
