Odisha government to set up 58 cold storages in 58 blocks

Bhubaneswar, Dec 11 (Reporter) Odisha government will soon set up 58 cold storages in 58 blocks of the state on PPP mode, Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Empowerment K V Singh Deo told the state Assembly on Wednesday. Replying to a question from Manas Kumar Dutta (BJP) the Deputy Chief Minister said cold storages would be set up to solve potato shortage in the state. Singh Deo said all efforts were being taken to ensure adequate supply of potatoes. After the cold storages become functional we will not have to depend upon other states for potatoes and West Bengal will no longer blackmail us. He said a decision had been taken to run the cold storages on hybrid mode. It could be run both on solar power and on electricity so that the chances of their failure due to high electricity tariff will be less. Singh Deo said the government was giving 50 percent subsidy on tariffs to Cold stores and the cold storages would have to pay only Rs 3.20 per unit against Rs 7.20 earlier. He said discussion was going on with interested entrepreneurs and a decision in this regard would be taken soon. The Deputy Chief Minister said the government would take steps to increase production after the cold storages were set up.
