Odisha: NHRC Seeks ATR on Alleged Gang Rape of a College Girl

Kendrapara, Dec 14 (Reporter)The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought an Action Taken Report (ATR) within four weeks from the Commissioner of Police, Cuttack, regarding the alleged gang rape of a college girl in Cuttack. The incident reportedly involved blackmail using obscene videos of the victim. The apex rights panel recently issued directions in response to a complaint filed by rights activist Sagar Jena. According to the complaint, the victim, a college student, had gone to a café within the Puri Ghat police limits during the Dussehra festival to celebrate her birthday with her boyfriend. However, her boyfriend, with the assistance of the café owner, secretly recorded obscene acts involving the victim on his phone. The videos were then used to blackmail and repeatedly sexually assault the victim. The complaint further alleged that four others, including a minor boy and some of the boyfriend’s friends, also gang-raped the victim over several days. Eventually, the victim approached the Badambadi police station and filed a First Information Report (FIR). Acting on the FIR, the police arrested six people, including the victim’s boyfriend and the café owner.
