Odisha: Noted devotional singer Shantilata Barik Chotray passes away

Bhubaneswar, Apr 2 (Reporter) Noted Odia Bhajan singer Shantilata Barik Chhotray, suffering from cancer, passed away at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar on Monday night. She was 65. Shantilata is survived by husband and son. Shantilata was a popular household name in Odisha for her devotional songs mostly on Lord Jagannath and other gods and goddesses. Born in Nimapada region in 1958, Shantilata was a student of Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya and she further learnt music from legendary gurus like Balakrushna Dash, Markandeya Mohapatra, Singhari Shyamsundar Kar, and Gopal Panda. She was an accredited singer of All India Radio. Some of here popular songs are "Mo Prabhu Jagannath,Kau Ta Kala,Jhinda Kataraku,Rama Nama Sara.,Manaku Karichhi Gopapura,Om Sashi Sekhar,Haati Dhali Dele,Kala Manika Re,Kalia Mo Jeebana,A Chaka Nayana,Kalia Kalia Maguni and Kaliaare." Odisha Governor Raghubar Das has condoled the demise of the bhajan singer. In his condolence message, Das said Shantilata Barik Chhotray made an immense contribution to Odia devotional music and she will be remembered for her work. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik also expressed condolences at the sad demise of the singer. Popular Bhajan singer Shantilata Barik was a great devotee of Lord Jagannath and she was popular in Odisha's households for her soulful renditions of Jagannath bhajans, Patnaik said in his condolence message. The CM announced that the singer’s last rites will be performed with a full state honour. Her mortal remains will be consigned to flames at Puri Swarga dwar on Tuesday, family sources said...////...
