Odisha records 23.28 pc polling till 11 AM

Bhubaneswar, May 13 (Reporter) An estimated 23.28 per cent polling was recorded in Odisha by 11 AM in the first phase polling in 28 Assembly and four Lok Sabha constituencies. Elections are going on in four Parliamentary constituencies of Kalahandi, Berhampur, Koraput and Nabarangpur and 28 Assembly seats under these Lok Sabha constituencies. ECI sources said while the highest polling of 26.61 per cent was recorded in Jeypore Assembly segment in Koraput, the lowest polling of 17.74 per cent was recorded in Ganjam district by 11 AM. Chief Electoral Officer Nikunja Dhal said polling was going on smoothly and the poll percentage was likely to increase further. The CEO said two polling officers, one at Narla and the other at Ganjam, have been placed under suspension for dereliction of duties. As per the office order of the District Election Officer, Ganjam, Manas Ranjan Sethy, appointed as Presiding Officer of Polling station no 74 under 135-Chikiti AC, is put under suspension with immediate effect under Section 134 of the Representation of People's Act 1951 for breach of official duty in connection with the Simultaneous General Election 2024 until further order. He said reports of poll boycotts had come to their notice in some areas over some local issues. Sources said around 1,000 voters on Monday boycotted the polling in Narayanpur block and in Mohana area in protest against the failure of the administration to solve their basic problems. The CEO said the local administration is pursuing them to participate in the polling and exercise their right. Around 1,0000 voters gathered in front of booth No 173 at Maisanpur in Narayanpatna and protested against the apathy of the government to solve their problems. Similarly voters also boycotted the polling at booth no 40 and 21 of Mohanpur area. Dhal said in total 65 Ballot Units,83 Control Units and 110 VVPAT have been replaced. Most of the EVMs, he said, were replaced during the mock polling while a very few were replaced after the polling started. He said 3, BU, 7 CU and 23 VVpats have been replaced after polling started. The CEO said wherever the complainant was received on the EVM machine it was replaced within 30 minutes. The authorities, Dhal said, faced some problems this time in conducting the election due to rain and nor'wester during the past couple of days but despite the challenges, the poll party reached the polling stations in time and conducted the election on Monday. The CEO said this time power has been supplied to all the polling stations. In some places solar power supply has been made to the booths. Many model booths, including thematic polling booths, were set up while some booths are being managed exclusively by women, and some cases by Divyangas, he said...////...
