Odisha records 37.64 pc polling till 1300 hours

Bhubaneswar, Jun 1 (Reporter) Amid stray violence, an approximate 37.64 percent of the total 99.61 lakh voters exercised their franchise till 1 PM in the final phase of the election to six Lok Sabha and 42 Assembly seats in Odisha on Saturday. The polling which started at 7 AM was delayed at several places due to glitches in the EVMs leading to large-scale discontentment among the voters but it picked up after the error was rectified. CEO N B Dhal said barring some disturbances outside the polling booths in some places, the polling was by and large, going on peacefully and satisfactorily without any major untoward incidents. Except for certain attempts made by some supporters of a particular political party to rig the polling and influence the voters to exercise their franchise in support of their party which led to tension, the polling was conducted otherwise smoothly. Sources said one BJP agent and two workers were injured during a clash with ruling BJD supporters at Malsasan booths number 184 and 185 under Salepur Assembly seat. BJP Salepur candidate Arindam Roy alleged that the BJD workers carrying lethal weapons attacked the BJP workers and indulged in booth rigging. Reports said one was injured after supporters of two political parties clashed with each other at Kuhudi in Astaranga .The Police later reached the spot and controlled the situation. At Sahupada in Bari Assembly constituency the supporters of two political parties had a scuffle over allegations of poll rigging .The supporters of BJP sat on a dharna in front of the Ramachandrapur Police station demanding action against the guilty. At Pattamundai, Police chased the supporters of a particular political party after they were allegedly trying to rig the polling which was opposed by the other party. Two tragic and unfortunate incidents reported during the day in which a booth-level officer, a teacher, in booth no 157 at Olei Chandanpur in Binjharpur Assembly constituency and a voter at Iswarpur in booth no 159 under Nilgiri Assembly constituency died. The voter turnout which was only 7.69 percent till 9 AM, picked up to 37.64 percent by 1300 hours with enthusiastic voters braving the hot and humid conditions, were seen lined up in large numbers before the booths to cast their ballots. Sources said by 1 PM the voter turnout in Balasore Parliamentary constituency was 40.71 percent, the highest, while Jajpur Lok Sabha constituency recorded the lowest voting turnout of 33.96 percent. Mayurbhanj Lok Sabha recorded 40.09 percent polling, Jagatsinghpur 38.82 percent, Bhadrak recorded 36.64 percent and Kendrapara recorded 35.84 percent polling till 1300 hours. Similarly, the Jaleswar Assembly constituency recorded 44.16 percent voting, the highest among the assembly constituencies,while the Dhamnagar Assembly seat registered the lowest polling percentage of only 31.20 percent. The other Assembly constituencies which recorded high voter turnout were Remuna 44.10 percent ,Basta 43.60, Simulia 42.30, Nimapara 42.20, Nilagiri 42.13, Udala 40.12, and Mahanga 40 percent polling. The Assembly constituencies which recorded low polling are Patkura 32.33 percent, Dharmasala 32 percent, Bari and Kendrapara 33 percent each and Badachana 36 percent. A total of 99.6 lakh voters will decide the fate of 66 candidates for the six Lok Sabha seats and 394 candidates contesting 42 Assembly seats.
