Bhubaneswar, Apr20 (Reporter) The toll in the boat tragedy in Mahanadi river Odisha’s Jharsuguda district, rose to seven on Saturday with the recovery of five more bodies.
Official sources said the boat carrying about 50 passengers from the Kharsani area in Chhattisgarh was on a pleasure trip to Patharsoni under Amavona block when the mishap took place in the middle of the Mahanadi river on Friday.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik while expressing his profound grief over the boat tragedy and death of people directed the Chief Secretary and Special Relief Commissioner to oversee the rescue and search operation.
On the direction of the Chief Minister, five scuba divers and two search cameras were dispatched to the spot to help the district administration in the search and rescue operation.
The boat capsized near Sarada ghat in the Lakhanpur area on Friday afternoon. The local fishermen, however, managed to rescue over 40 passengers, while others went missing.
Two bodies were retrieved during a search operation on Friday and five more bodies were fished out from the river on Saturday by the ODRAF and Fire service team engaged in the search operation.
Sources said the deceased included three women and three boys.
One more body is yet to be traced out by the search operation team.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had already announced an ex gratia of Rs 4 lakh to the next kin of each deceased and directed the district administration to provide proper treatment to the rescued people...////...
