One indoor patient dies as fire breaks out in ESI Hospital, Sealdah

Kolkata, Oct 18 (Reporter) One indoor patient was killed after a major fire broke out in Employees' State Insurance (ESI) Hospital, Sealdah, in the city on Friday morning forcing the authorities to shift some 80 patients, official sources said. The deceased was identified as Uttam Bardhan, who was undergoing treatment for cancer at the hospital for the past month. He died of suffocation, family sources said. ESI Medical Superintendent Aditya Das, however, said the death was not related to the fire. All attempts of the doctors to treat him failed and he died at around 9.30 AM. The remaining patients were safely evacuated to other wards at the hospital, Das said. A source said 55 patients were shifted to Maniktala branch of the ESI. West Bengal Fire Brigade Minister Sujit Bose said they received a call at around 5 30 AM and immediately fire fighting personnel rushed and safely evacuated some 80 patients. Some 10 fire fighting vehicles were deployed to combat the flames, which was first noticed at 5 AM. State Minister in charge of labour and ESI Department Moly Ghatak said a preliminary report said the fire sparked from a short circuit in the first floor and alleged the automatic water spraying system was not functioning. He said some 92 patients admitted to the Hospital were undergoing treatment at the time of fire. The hospital has some 246 beds. The Outdoor Patients Departments were not functioning, but the emergency services were opened and functioning even though the power was cut off. The fire was first noticed by a hospital staff who saw smoke billowing from the male surgery ward on the first floor and informed the authorities. Eighty patients admitted to the male surgery ward of the hospital were safely evacuated by the firemen and the personnel of the State Disaster Management Department...////...
