Bhubaneswar, Dec 3 (Reporter) Members of the Opposition BJD and the Congress on Tuesday staged a noisy walkout after Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Minister Krushana
Chandra Patra while replying to a debate on the admissibility of an adjournment motion moved by the Opposition on price rise said the opposition allegations were baseless and not based on fact.
Participating in the debate the opposition members said while the prices of essential commodities including potato, vegetables,onion, pulses, edible oil, and fuel skyrocketed the government was not taking any action to control the price and the Minister acting as a mere spectator.
The Minister, they alleged was trying to mislead the people by giving false statements in media.
The Minister said the present potato crisis arose due to the inaction of the previous government which has pushed the state into such a situation.
He said the Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Minister had talked to his counterpart in West Bengal and he has promised to solve the problem.
The Minister said the prices of pulses, onion, potato, edible fuel has slightly increased due to irregularities in climatic condition, rates in international and domestic market.
The Minister said though the BJD government remained in power for 24 years it failed to provide irrigation to farm land and increase production.The state, he said depend upon UP,AP, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, chhatisgarh and West Bengal for potato,edible oil,onion, and pulses.
He assured the house that the state had sufficient stock of potato and appealed to people not to be panicked. The Minister said the District Collectors were asked to have discussion with traders and keep a vigil on the market.
Congress members Tara Prasad Bahini Pati, Ashok Das and BJD members--Byomkesha Roy,
Dhruba Charan Sahu, Goutam Buddha Das alleged that poor people suffer a lot as the state government failed to control the prices.
The prices of commodities rose after the election and the inflation rate in the state was 6.2 percent against 4.3 in West Bengal and 5.3 percent in Jharkhand.The state has crossed the upper tolerance limit of the RBI.
But the treasury bench members--Saroj Kumar Padhi, D P Nayak, Babu Singh and Ashok Mohanty defended the government saying the government was with the people and taking steps to control the price...////...
