Shillong, Jun 30 (Reporter) More than 50 people, including women and children, took ill after allegedly consuming contaminated food at a home in Meghalaya’s Eastern West Khasi Hills district during a funeral ceremony, officials said on Sunday.
Health officials said the patients were admitted to Mairang and Nongstoiñ civil hospitals.
The patients began to check into the hospital from June 28 evening, after having a feast at a funeral ceremony at Namdong village, Pynsuk Marbaniang, a medical health official at U Tirot Sing Memorial Civil Hospital in Mairang.
Initially, 10 people came to the hospital complaining about diarrhoea and vomiting. They were provided medical care immediately.
She said that the following morning, the numbers increased and as many as 40 or more patients checked into the hospital, which included several women and children, with the similar symptoms of diarrhoea and vomiting.
“All these patients had gone to the same funeral ceremony. We suspect it to be a case of food poisoning,” Marbaninag said.
Most of the patients are out of danger and many have been discharged from the hospita following treatment, she said, adding that however, there are still others admitted in the hospital...////...
