Karwar, Feb 13 (Reporter) Padma Shri awardee and renowned folk singer Sukri Bommagowda, revered for her contributions to Karnataka’s tribal music traditions, passed away early Thursday at her residence in Badigeri, Ankola taluk. She was 91 and had been suffering from age-related ailments. A prominent figure of the Halakki Okkaliga community, Bommagowda dedicated her life to preserving indigenous folk music, amassing a vast repertoire of over 5,000 songs. Fondly known as the 'Nightingale of Halakki,' she played a crucial role in safeguarding Karnataka’s rich cultural heritage and was an outspoken advocate against alcohol consumption. Bommagowda had recently undergone treatment for respiratory issues in Udupi but succumbed to her illness around 4 AM. She is survived by her grandchildren and a daughter-in-law. Recognising her invaluable contributions, she was honoured with several prestigious awards, including the Janapada Shri Award (1999), the Nadoja Award (2006), and the Karnataka Rajyotsava Award. In 2017, she was conferred the Padma Shri, one of India's highest civilian honours, for her relentless efforts in preserving and promoting tribal music. Condolences poured in from various quarters, with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and other state leaders mourning her demise. Cultural organisations across Karnataka have planned tribute events to celebrate her legacy. Her funeral is scheduled to take place in her native village later today, with several dignitaries expected to pay their last respects...////...
