Police fire tear gas shells on protesting farmers

Chandigarh, Feb 21 (Reporter) Police lobbed tear gas shells as protesting farmers resumed their Delhi Chalo (march to Delhi) agitation at Shambhu border between Punjab and Haryana on Wednesday. Police sources said tear gas shells were fired through drones, following which the situation at the border turned tense on day nine of the farmers' protest in parts of North India. The police action started as around 14,000 protesting farmers started trying to move forward with their 1200 tractors, a day after the fourth round of talks with the government proved inconclusive. Meanwhile, Union Agriculture Minister Arjun Munda tweeted that the government was ready for the fifth round of talks with the farmers' unions, who are agitating over a charter of demands including a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Prices (MSP) for their crops, a loan waiver and implementation of the Swaminathan Commission's recommendations. The other demands are pension for farmers and agricultural labourers, withdrawal of police cases and compensation for the families of farmers killed during the earlier protest, relief for victims of Lakhimpur Kheri violence and reinstatement of the Land Acquisition Act 2013. Farmer leaders Jagjit Singh Dallewal and Sarwan Singh Pandher are currently discussing the invitation proposal from the government. On the other hand, Additional Inspector General (Administration) and Spokesperson of the Haryana police Manisha Chaudhary said forces have been deployed along all the borders with Punjab. The farmers can hold protests peacefully and should not take the law into their own hands, she said. "We got information that farmers brought heavy machinery to the protest site and we requested Punjab police to not allow such machinery. We appeal again to the farmers to not bring heavy machines to the protest site. They can submit a memorandum to us regarding their demands. We are in regular touch with Punjab police and are sharing information with them," the senior police officer said...////...
