Bengaluru, Aug 21 (Reporter) A political storm has erupted in Karnataka with the revelation of a 2014 letter from Parvathi Siddaramaiah, the wife of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, to the Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA).
The letter, intended to request compensation land for a 3.16-acre plot that MUDA had repurposed, is now at the centre of a heated controversy due to allegations of document tampering.
The crux of the controversy is an erased line in the letter, obscured by whitener. Opposition parties, including the BJP and JD(S), argue that this erasure was not a simple clerical mistake but a deliberate attempt to conceal a specific request for land in the prestigious Vijayanagar Layout. This area is known for its high value and is central to a broader land allotment scandal.
The opposition claims that the alteration was designed to obscure favoritism or corruption by removing evidence of a request for this particularly valuable land.
According to the BJP and JD(S), the presence of the erased line suggests that Parvathi Siddaramaiah initially requested land in the sought-after Vijayanagar Layout, which would have granted her an undue advantage. They allege that the request was manipulated to avoid scrutiny and protect the interests of the Siddaramaiah family.
This stance has intensified calls for Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's resignation, with demands for a transparent and thorough investigation into the matter.
However, Siddaramaiah has firmly denied any wrongdoing and asserted that his wife’s request was not for a specific locality but for any land of equivalent value. Siddaramaiah has maintained that the alteration in the letter did not change the fundamental nature of the request, which was aimed at securing fair compensation rather than targeting a particular plot.
Urban Development Minister BS Suresha has weighed in, attributing the erasure to a typographical error, rather than an intentional attempt at document manipulation.
Suresha insisted that despite the erasure, the context and intent of the letter remained unchanged, and there was no reason to suspect foul play. "The erasure was simply a mistake in typing,” Suresha said. "It does not alter the context or intent of the letter."
Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy has questioned the timeline and legality of the land transactions mentioned in the letter. Kumaraswamy highlighted discrepancies in the transaction history, such as the timeline of when the land was supposedly purchased and registered, raising doubts about the legitimacy of the claims and the integrity of the land dealings involved.
"How could the land have been purchased and registered if the layout had already been established?” Kumaraswamy asked. “This discrepancy raises serious doubts about the validity of the transactions and the claims made in the letter," he said...////...
