President Murmu arrives in Meghalaya on two-day visit

Tura (Meghalaya), Jan 15 (Reporter) President Droupadi Murmu on Monday arrived in Meghalaya on a two-day visit during which she is scheduled to attend a series of events. The President was received by the Meghalaya Governor Phagu Chauhan, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, Education Minister Rakkam Sangma at Baljek Airport in West Garo Hills district. Murmu will inaugurate the Meghalaya Games 2024 at PA Sangma Sports Complex in Tura. Over 3,000 athletes representing 12 districts of the State will compete in 22 disciplines. Traditional games of the Khasi, Jaintia and Garo indigenous communities will be included in the Meghalaya Games for which the state government has allocated over Rs 23 crore. Murmu will stay overnight at Tura, which is predominantly inhabited by indigenous Garo people, thus becoming the first President to spend overnight in Garo Hills region. Murmu will also be the first state guest to stay at newly inaugurated Raj Bhavan in Tura. She will be the third President to visit Garo Hills after late President Dr Rajendra Prasad and President Pratibha Patil had visited the town in 1952 and 2008 respectively. On Tuesday, the President will fly to Meghalaya’s capital Shillong and will address a public gathering at Mawphlang Sacred Groves. She will also lay the foundation stones of the Shillong Peak ropeway project and tourist accommodations in the villages of Kongthong, Mawlyngot, and Kudengrim too during a function to be held at Mawphlang. After the Mawphlang function, the President will attend a civic reception to be hosted in her honour by the Meghalaya government at the Raj Bhavan in Shillong...////...
