PSJ Court adjourns ex-TN Minister Senthilbalaji case to Aug 28, remand extended

Chennai, Aug 22 (Reporter) A Principal Sessions Court on Thursday adjourned to August 28 for continuing the cross-examination of witnesses in the PMLA case against ruling DMK leader and former Tamil Nadu Minister V.Senthilbalaji, who was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the cash-for-jobs scam last year during the previous AIADMK regime. After the court dismissed his discharge petition, charges were framed against the Ex-Minister, also the DMK Karur strongman, on August 8 and the trial had commenced last week with the cross examination of one of the witnesses. When the case came up for hearing today before Principal Sessions Judge Ms.S.Alli, he was produced before the court via video conferencing from Puzhal Central prison, when one of the witnesses--an official of the City Union Bank Karur Branch--was cross-examined by the defence counsel. Since the cross-examination could not be completed, the Judge adjourned the matter to August 28 and extended the judicial remand of Mr Senthilbalaji till that date. It may be noted that the Madras High Court yesterday, while hearing the criminal revision petition of Mr Senthilbalaji challenging the PSJ Court's order dismissing his discharge plea, observed that what was left to hear when the charges were framed and trial and cross-examination of a prosecution witness had commenced in the case. During the hearing, Additional Solicitor General ARL Sundaram, representing the ED, submitted that the PSJ court had framed the charges and the trial has already begun. A Division Bench of Justice S M Subramaniam and Justice V Sivagnanam wondered what was left to entertain in the revision petition as charges were already framed against the petitioner. The former Minister's counsel said a discharge petition could be filed at any stage of the trial and sought time to accommodate the senior counsel he has engaged in the case. Following this, the High Court adjourned the matter to August 28 for further proceedings...////...
