Patna, June 9 (Reporter) Ram Nath Thakur, son of Bharat Ratna recipient Karpoori Thakur and a Rajya Sabha member of Janata Dal (United) took oath as a minister in PM Narendra Modi led NDA government's third term at the Centre.
Born on March 3, 1950 in Karpoori Gram of Bihar's Samastipur district, Thakur is a prominent politician and social activist.
Thakur's journey in public service began with his involvement in the movements led by eminent leaders such as Ram Manohar Lohia, Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan, and his father, Jan Nayak Karpoori Thakur.
His commitment to empowering the underprivileged and advocating for a more equitable society led him to face imprisonment numerous times during non-violent protests.
He embarked on his political career by becoming a member of the Bihar Legislative Council in May 1988 and remained MLC till February 2000. He served as Minister of Sugarcane Industries in Lalu Prasad's first cabinet.
He became member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly from March 2000 to November 2010. During his tenure, he held the position of Cabinet Minister from November 2005 to November 2010 and was Minister of Revenue and Land Reforms, Law, Information and Public Relations in the Nitish Kumar ministry.
In April 2014 and April 2020, Thakur was elected to the Rajya Sabha.
Like his father, Thakur was committed towards improving the educational scenario and was Secretary in various educational institutions, including Prabhavati Ramdulari High School, S.M.R. Charan Karpoori College, and Gokul Karpoori Phooleshwari College in Karpoori Gram if Samastipur.
