Kolkata, Aug 31, (Reporter) The Calcutta High Court has directed the Kolkata Police to set free arrested convener Chhatra Samaj convenor Sayan Lahiri by 2 PM on Saturday, court sources said.
Single bench judge Justice Amrita Sinha, while directing the police to release Lahiri, who was arrested on August 27 after emerging out from a live debate at a studio of a private TV channel on RG Kar Hospital's lady medic rape and murder case, observed that the convener appeared
to be an insignificant character who does not hold any position of power or influence in the cry for justice in the aftermath of the RG Kar incident.
The judge, in her order on late Friday, opined that to uphold and restore the faith of the public in the judiciary, the students' convenor of the West Bengal Chhatra Samaj was to be freed by Kolkata Police by 2 PM on Saturday.
Sayan Lahiri was among the three conveners for organising the Nabanna Abhijan, which police said turned violent on Tuesday last.
Hearing a petition filed by Lahiri's mother, Anjali Lahiri, on Friday, who sought judicial intervention for quashing the case against her son and granting bail, the court ordered his release from custody by 2 pm on Saturday.
Single bench judge Amrita Sinha directed police to refrain from taking any coercive action against Sayan Lahiri about the case in which he has been arrested or any other case that has been or may be registered against him without the leave of the court.
He is now under 14-day police custody and was arrested by various sections, including non-bailable ones, court sources said.
The Calcutta high court's interim order also directed the state to file an affidavit in opposition to the averments made by the petitioner by September 20 and reply, if any, by the petitioner within October 4...////...
