Bhubaneswar, Aug 27 (Reporter) Opposition BJD and Congress members on Tuesday stalled the business of the Odisha Assembly demanding caste census in the state.
The House witnessed a ruckus right from the question hour forcing Speaker Surama Padhi to adjourn the house four times in the pre-lunch session till 1600 hours .
The Speaker also convened an all-party meeting to resolve the impasse in the house for the last six days due to the vociferous protest by the Opposition BJD and the Congress over several issues.
As soon as the house assembled for the day to take up the question hours, the Congress and BJD members trooped into the well of the house, shouted slogans, and demanded caste census be conducted in the state.
Congress MLA Tara Prasad Bahinipati and BJD MLA Adhiraj Panigrahi were seen trying to climb up to the Speaker’s podium but were prevented by the Assembly security staff.
As the house plunged into a chaotic situation with slogan shouting Opposition occupying the well and continuing their slogans against the government, the Speaker adjourned the House till 11.30 AM.
The house subsequently adjourned thrice till 1600 hours as it witnessed uproarious scenes with the Opposition BJD and Congress insisting on their demand for a caste census.
‘The Speaker had to convene an all-party meeting to diffuse the situation but the meeting remained inconclusive.
The House reconvened at 1600 hours after a series of adjournments, to take up the demands for grants for the Women and Child Development, Mission Shakti and Tourism departments.
The agitated Congress members however staged a noisy walkout in the house followed by the BJD during the debate in support of their demands.
On Saturday too, the Opposition stalled the proceedings of the house till 1600 hours demanding adequate reservation for the SC, ST, and OBC students in Technical and Medical educations in the state.
The Opposition came down heavily on the Mohan Majhi government for not implementing the proportional reservations for SC, ST, and OBC students in both Technical and Medical education in the state.
