Belagavi (Karnataka), Dec 26 (Reporter) Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) Chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Thursday emphasised that it is the "sacred duty" of the Indian National Congress to confront the growing threat to Mahatma Gandhi’s legacy from those in power in New Delhi.
Speaking virtually at a historic gathering marking the centenary of Gandhi’s presidentship of the Congress session, she warned that the Gandhian ideals are under attack from forces that have long opposed the Mahatma.
In her address, Sonia stated, "The legacy of Mahatma Gandhi is under threat from those in power in New Delhi and the ideologies and institutions that have nurtured them. These organisations never fought for our freedom. They opposed Mahatma Gandhi bitterly, created a toxic atmosphere, and ultimately played a role in his assassination. Today, they glorify his killers," the former Congress President said.
She further called for an uncompromising response to these forces, urging Congress members to unite and face the challenges ahead with renewed determination. "It is now our sacred duty to renew our resolve to confront these forces with all the might at our command," Sonia said, referencing the gathering as a crucial step in this fight.
The CPP Chairperson also took a moment to reflect on the transformative moment in Indian history when Gandhi presided over the INC meeting a hundred years ago. She noted that his leadership at that time was a turning point in both the independence movement and the party’s evolution.
"The Gandhian principles of truth, non-violence, and national unity remain fundamental to our identity and our vision for India," she stated, underlining that these principles are as relevant today as they were during the freedom struggle.
The Congress leader’s message was reinforced by the launch of the 'Gandhi Bharat' programme in Belagavi, aimed at spreading Gandhian values across India.
In a press release, the Akhil Bharatiya Congress Party condemned the rise of communal forces undermining the country's unity, calling for a revival of Gandhi’s teachings in these challenging times.
Sonia Gandhi concluded her address by wishing the Congress party and its members the best for 2025, urging them to meet the coming challenges with renewed purpose and urgency...////...
