Tiruchirapalli (Tamil Nadu), Nov 22 (Reporter) A mortar shell suspected to be used by the Indian army was found abandoned on the Cauvery river bank at Andanallur village in Tiruchirapalli district of Tamil Nadu, triggering panic among the locals on Friday evening. A probe is still underway to find out how the mortar shell was abandoned on the river bank. On being alerted by the locals, senior police officials along with a team of Tamil Nadu Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) rushed to the site and seized the mortar. The seizure of the second mortar shell was informed to the senior army officials of the 117 Infantry Battalion (Territorial Army), Tiruchirapalli for analysis and identification of its origin. Meanwhile, the Jeeyapuram police have safely removed the second mortar shell to a location. Police refused to divulge other details of the mortar shell, which will be handed over to the Army for furthr investigations. Police said this is the second mortar shell recovered from the River Cauvery bank within a month. Earlier, a live mortar shell weighing 3.8 kilogram and 60 cm long was found abandoned on October 30 on the River Cauvery bank at the same spot near the Sri Vadatheerthanatha Swamy Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva. It was said to be more than five decades old. The mortar shell was later diffused through a controlled explosion by the police at nearby River Coleroon...////...
