Chennai, Dec 26 (Reporter) Terming the alleged sexual assault of a girl student at the iconic Anna University which has created a political stir, the National Commission for Women (NCW) termed the it as heinous, took suo motu cognisance of the incident and directed the Tamil Nadu Director General of Police (DGP) to include Sec 71 and 72 of BNS, 2023, to the FIR for stricter punishment and initiate action against those who had leaked the FIR in public domain in violation of Supreme Court guidelines. While assuring to stand with the victim in her fight for justice, the NCW, condemned this heinous act in strongest terms and blamed the negligence of the police, while raising concerns about the collapsing Law and Order situation in Tamil Nadu. She also directed the DGP to ensure free medical care and protection for the victim. In a social media post, NCW Chairperson Vijay Rahatkar said "the NCW has taken suo moto cognizance of the disturbing sexual assault of a 19-year-old student from Anna University, Chennai."
