Chennai, Dec 26 (Reporter) Observing that the accused in the sexual assault of a girl student at the
State-run Anna University was swiftly arrested by the police within five hours, Tamil Nadu Law Minister S.Reghupathy on Thursday refuted the Opposition allegations and said there was no
need for the government to hide anything on the issue.
Talking to reporters at DMK headquarters 'Anna Arivalayam' here, he said the ruling DMK would ensure that the accused Gnanasekaran (37) would get stringent punishment as per law.
To a question, he said at present, one person has been arrested and imprisoned. Only further investigations will reveal whether anyone else is involved in this incident.
"In a swift action, the police have arrested the accused within five hours upon receiving the complaint...there was no need for the government to hide anything or cover up the incident",
he asserted.
He also denied the Opposition charge that the accused was a Student's Wing member of the
DMK and said Gnanasekaran was not at all a member of the party and that he has no connections whatsoever with the DMK.
Reiterating that the police took appropriate action immediately, the Minister said there is no need
for Chief Minister M K Salin or the DMK government to cover up this incident.
"The arrested person is not even a basic member of the DMK. But some media outlets are reporting that he is a member of the DMK and a deputy organizer in the student wing", he noted.
"I would like to reiterate that the arrested Gnanasekaran has no connection with the DMK. Therefore, without covering up this case, immediate action was taken and he was imprisoned", he added.
The DMK government was determined to punish him, Mr Reghupathy asserted and recalled the Pollachi sexual assault incident during the previous AIADMK regime in which the son of a prominent figure was involved and the attempts made by the government to cover it up...////...
