Sexual Assault on student at Anna Univ campus triggers outrage, one arrested

Chennai, Dec 25 (Reporter) In a shocking incident that triggered outrage, a girl student at the prestigious State-run Anna University campus in Chennai was sexually assaulted by two people, triggering tension and protests in the sprawling campus on Wednesday. Reports said the girl was talking to her boy friend, when the two culprits, threatened her, beat up her boy friend and sexually assaulted her on the night December 23. Acting on a complaint from the victim, the Kotturpuram police arrested a 37-year-old man, identified as Gnansekaran, who runs a biriyani shop on the footpath near the campus and was found to be involved in several waylaying and robbery cases, police said in a release. A hunt was on to nab the other person, reports said. As the incident created a furore, Students Federation of India (SFI) activists and AIDWA members staged a protest demonstration in front of the campus demanding stern action against the perpetrators. However, on a assurance by the University Registrar J Prakash, promising action, the agitators withdrew their protest. Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Higher Education Minister Govai Chezhiyan said the police are investigating and the culprits will be brought to justice very soon. Stating that prompt action is being taken under the DMK regime, he said appropriate decisions will be taken at the university level regarding the action to be taken to prevent such incidents from happening again. In a social media post in Tamil, the Minister said "a student from the College of Engineering, Guindy, has filed a complaint of sexual assault and the police are investigating. "Prompt action is being taken under the DMK regime. Very soon the culprits will be brought to justice", the Minister added. In a related development, the Registrar in the statement, said police have registered a case on the basis of a complaint from the victim and a probe was on into the incident. He said another complaint was registered with the University's probe committee which would conduct detailed investigations and submit a report. A police release said the girl student was talking to her boy friend behind a building when the culprit threatened her and sexually assaulted her. Based on scientific and strong evidences, Gnanasekaran was arrested and he has confessed to committing the offence. Leaders various Opposition parties, including AIADMK, BJP, PMK strongly condemned the incident and alleged that the law and order had deteriorated in the state and there is no safety for anyone under the ruling DMK, except for the culprits. While AIADMK General Secretary and Leader of the Opposition Edappadi K Palaniswami termed the incident as shameful, PMK Founder Dr.S.Ramadoss expressed shock over the incident as it had happened in the world famous Anna University campus, located in the heart of the city, and was strongly condemnable. BJP State President K Annamalai expressed outrage over the incident and urged Chief Minister M K Stalin to take urgent steps to bring the perpetrators to book. He also said the DMK government had failed to strengthen the law and order machinery and incidents of crime are on the increase and women were feeling insecure.
