Bengaluru, March 15 (Reporter) Amidst political landscape in Karnataka seems to be heating up, former Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Friday said Jagadish Shettar will contest from Belagavi in the upcoming Lok Sabha election in the state.
Yediyurappa claimed to have persuaded Shettar, a former chief minister of the state, who had recently return to the BJP from the Congress, to contest from this constituency.
Shettar had left the BJP after being denied a ticket for the Karnataka Assembly election in May 2023. He then joined the Congress party.
"Jagadish Shettar met me yesterday. He was not willing to contest from Belgaum (Belagavi) Lok Sabha constituency. I convinced him to contest from there. He has happily agreed to it,” Yediyurappa, a member of the BJP Parliamentary Board, told reporters.
Meanwhile, BJP MP Mangala Angadi confirmed that Shettar's nomination for Belagavi was final, despite her family's hopes for a ticket. She expressed willingness to campaign for Shettar if he receives the ticket.
She said, "Our family's name did not appear in the second list. So we went to meet the central leadership. However, by then there were talks of offering a ticket to Jagadish Shettar."
Some incumbent MPs, including Pratap Simha and Nalin Kumar Kateel, were omitted from the initial candidate list.
The Lingayat community, to which both Shettar and Yediyurappa belong, holds significant influence in Karnataka politics.
Former Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai was nominated from Haveri, and Prahlad Joshi from Hubballi-Dharwad.
Some seats, including Belagavi, Haveri, and Hubballi-Dharwad, are yet to have their nominees announced.
Overall, the nomination of Shettar from Belagavi has sparked interest and debate within the BJP ranks and Karnataka politics, particularly concerning the dynamics of Lingayat representation in the region...////...
