Six women killed, four hurt in building collapse near Ooty, CM announces solatium

Chennai, Feb 7 (Reporter) In a tragic incident, six women workers were killed and four others were injured when the toilet of a renovating private building collapsed from a height of about 25 ft and fell on them from a cliff at Lovedale near Udhagamandlam in Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu on Wednesday. Chief Minister M.K.Stalin announced a solatium of Rs two lakh to the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to the injured. Four people, including the building owner were arrested. Police said a Cliff caved-in at a construction site, being renovated collapsed and fell on them. The victims, all tea plantation workers, came for work after the owner offers extra money. After hard work the workers were having tea in front of the building when the toilet being rebuilt, collapsed from a height of 25 ft and fell on them. In all ten women were trapped under the rubble. While Six women trapped under the debris died on the spot, four others, who sustained injuries were admitted to hospital and they were out of danger. The incident occurred at the site of the construction of a private bungalow; an abandoned public toilet on the cliff that collapsed on the workers. An earthmover was used to rescue the victims and the process completed aftr about five hours of operation. Construction workers at the site said they were building a retaining wall below an overhanging cliff which towered around 25 feet above the construction site. An abandoned public toilet, on the cliff, is said to have collapsed on top of the workers, along with a portion of the cliff. Meanwhile, Mr Stalin offered his condolences to the bereaved family members and announced solatium from the Chief Minister's Public Relief fund, while directing the hospital authorities to provide best of treatment to them...////...
