Nagapattinam (Tamil Nadu), Nov 12 (Reporter) The Sri Lankan Navy on Tuesday arrested 12 fishermen hailing from Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu and impounded their mechanised fishing trawler allegedly for poaching in its territorial waters.
Tamil Nadu fisheries department officials said here that the fishermen hailing from Akkaraipettai coastal hamlet were detained by the Sri Lankan naval personnel when they were fishing on high seas close to the Delft Island.
The seized boat, together with Indian fishermen, was taken to the Kankesanthurai Harbour and handed over to the Mailadi Fisheries officials for onwards legal proceedings.
This is the second instance of arrest of Indian fishermen by the Island Navy within a week.
Twenty-three fishermen from Rameswaram along with three mechanised fishing trawlers were apprehended by the Lankan Navy on similar charges on Sunday last.
With this, the Sri Lankan Navy has arrested 497 fishermen from Rameswaram, Nagapattinam, Thoothukudi, and Pudukottai districts of Tamil Nadu, seized 66 Indian fishing boats so far this year, and initiated legal proceedings against them...////...
