Chennai, Jan 28 (Reporter) Two fishermen from Tamil Nadu were injured
when Sri Lankan Navy opened fire while fishing in the high seas early
on Tuesday morning and arrested 13 fishermen.
Reports received here said the 13fishermen were arrested by the
Lankan Navy for allegedly fishing in their territorial waters by crossing
the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL).
The fishermen, hailing from Karaikal, were fishing near Neduntheevu,
when they were apprehended by the Lankan Navy and seized their boat.
The Lankan Navy opened fire on them, injuring two of them, alleging
that they tried to evade arrest.
They were later taken to the Kankesanthurai Fishing Harbour in the Island
Nation.
This is the second incident of fishermen arrest in two days after 34 fishermen,
including 32 from Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu, were apprehended by the Lankan
Navy and impounded their boats.
Expressing serious concern over the arrests, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on
Monday wrote to External Affairs Minister (EAM) Dr. S. Jaishankar urging
him to take diplomatic steps to secure their immediate release...////...
