Chennai, Sp 7 (Reporter) After the recent spiritual event in two government schools in which an invited speaker made regressive and unscientific thoughts about past life triggered widespread protests, the 'Guest Speaker' Mahavishnu was arrested on Saturday at the Chennai airport when he arrived from Australia. He was taken to an undisclosed destination for questioning from the airport. Tamil Nadu School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi condemned it and said legal action would be taken against the Speaker which would be a lesson to all and prevent recurrence of such incidents in the state after Mahavishnu, insulted a visually-impaired teacher. It may be recalled that Mahavishnu, in his speech claimed that a person born with a disability is due to the sins he/she had committed in their previous life. Following a complaint, he was booked under various sections, including 192, 196(1)a, 352, 353(2) of the new Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), formerly IPC, and also under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 (RPwD) Act. There were vociferous demand for his arrest for his derogatory remarks against the differently- abled and for making regressive and unscientific thoughts about past life in two government schools at Ashok Nagar and Saidapet in the city last week which came to light on Friday. Several political parties and outfits and civil society organisations sought to know how could a spiritual event was allowed to b conducted in government schools. Following this, Mahavishnu released a video from abroad stating that he is not in hiding and would meet the School Education Minister upon reaching Chennai. After coming to know that he was landing at the airport, he was arrested soon after his arrival from Australia via Singapore. Police forces were posted at Gate No.5 through which he was expected to exit. However, they took him away through an alternate exit without allowing him to interact with the large number of of media personnel who were waiting outside. Taking strong objections to his remarks insulting the differently-abled, the Tamil Nadu Association for the Rights of All Types of Differently-abled and Caregivers (TARATDAC) had filed a complaint against him at the Saidapet police station seeking legal action. After the recent spiritual event in the government schools triggered a row, with the allies of the ruling DMK and Opposition parties condemning it, Chief Minister M K Stalin issued guidelines for schools. The incident snowballed into a major row after the video of a ‘spiritual’ event held at the Government Higher Secondary School in Saidapet, in the city went viral on social media. In the event, Mahavishnu insulted a visually-impaired teacher when he questioned him about certain regressive ideas that he preached. Mr. Mahavishnu had also made a similar speech at the government school in Ashok Nagar, following which the Principals of the two schools were transferred on Friday evening. As the issue triggered strong Opposition with various political parties, including DMK's ally Congress, and Opposition parties like PMK expressing their condemnation for sowing the seeds of regressive thinking. Mr Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi also visited both the schools and held an inquest. Meanwhile, Mr Stalin announced fresh guidelines to streamline various events in schools across the State. “I have instructed for formulating fresh guidelines to streamline various events in schools across the State, aimed at imparting progressive ideas to students and encourage scientific temper among them,” he said in X, without directly referring to the incident. At the Saidapet school, the teacher had questioned the Speaker for allegedly preaching unscientific thoughts about past life, leading to a heated argument...////...
