Rameswaram (Tamil Nadu), Aug 27 (Reporter) The Sri Lankan Navy arrested eight Indian fishermen hailing from Rameswaram and impounded their trawler allegedly for violating the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL), an official said on Tuesday.
With this recent apprehension, the Sri Lankan Navy has arrested 341 Indian fishermen and seized a total of 46 Indian trawlers this year for allegedly poaching in the Island nation’s waters.
Tamil Nadu fisheries department officials said here that more than 3,500 fishermen had set sail into the sea for fishing from Rameswaram fishing jetty on Monday morning, after staying away from the sea for the past few days due to choppy weather conditions.
While they were fishing at mid-sea close to the IMBL, the Sri Lankan Navy apprehended eight fishermen on Monday and seized their trawler on charges of poaching in Sri Lankan waters.
The Sri Lankan Navy claimed that during a special operation conducted north of Mannar to curb illegal fishing by foreign trawlers, an Inshore Patrol Craft belonging to the North Central Naval Command spotted a cluster of Indian fishing trawlers engaging in illegal fishing in its territorial waters.
The operation led to the seizure of one Indian fishing trawler with eight Indian fishermen on board, who continue to remain in Sri Lankan waters.
The seized Indian trawler, together with eight Indian fishermen, were taken to the Talaimannar and subsequently handed over to the fisheries officials for legal action...////...
