Sri Lankan Navy apprehends 8 more fishermen from TN

Ramanathapuram (Tamil Nadu), Dec 8 (Reporter) The Sri Lankan Navy arrested eight fishermen from Mandapam coastal hamlet in Ramanathapuram district and seized two mechanized fishing trawlers on the charges of violating the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) and straying into the Island nation’s territorial waters early on Sunday. Reports quoting Fisheries department officials said here that the fishermen had ventured into the sea in two mechanised fishing trawlers from Mandapam on Saturday morning for routine fishing. The fishermen were intercepted by Sri Lankan Naval patrol craft, when they were fishing on high seas close to the Delft Island (Neduntheevu). The seized trawlers together with Indian fishermen were taken to Kankesanthurai naval camp and later handed over to the Fisheries officials for onward legal proceedings. This is the third incident of arrest of Indian fishermen by the Lankan Navy within a week. Meanwhile, the mechanized boat fishermen of Rameswaram were observing a two-day strike since yesterday demanding the intervention of the Indian government for the immediate release of 14 fishers arrested by the Sri Lankan navy on December 5. They were also demanding the State government to give suitable compensation to the families of the fishermen imprisoned in Lanka. With this latest arrest, the Sri Lankan Navy has apprehended 537 Indian fishermen from Rameswaram, Nagapattinam, Thoothukudi and Pudukottai districts of Tamil Nadu, besides Karaikal in Puducherry and seized 70 Indian fishing boats poaching in Sri Lankan waters, so far this year and initiated legal proceedings against them...////...
