Rameswaram (Tamil Nadu), Dec 5 (Reporter) The Sri Lankan Navy apprehended 14 fishermen from Rameswaram and confiscated two mechanized fishing trawlers allegedly for indulging in illegal fishing activities in its territorial waters early on Thursday.
Tamil Nadu fisheries department officials said here that the fishermen had set sail into the sea in two mechanised fishing trawlers from Rameswaram fishing jetty on Wednesday morning for routine fishing.
The fishermen were fishing on high seas north off Mannar, when they were intercepted by Sri Lankan Navy and arrested on charges of trespassing.
Meanwhile, the Sri Lankan Navy in a statement said a special operation conducted by the Northern Naval Command led to the apprehension of 14 Indian fishermen and seizure of two Indian fishing trawlers.
The North Central Naval Command spotted a cluster of Indian fishing boats engaging in illegal fishing in Lankan waters.
In response, the Northern Naval Command deployed it's Fast Attack Craft and North Central Naval Command it's Inshore Patrol Craft to drive away those Indian fishing boats poaching in the sea area north of Mannar.
The operation resulted in the apprehension of 14 Indian fishermen and seizure of two Indian boats who continued to remain in Sri Lankan waters.
The seized trawlers together with Indian fishermen were brought to the Talaimannar Pier and handed over to the Mannar fisheries official for onward legal proceedings.
With this arrest , the Sri Lankan Navy has apprehended 529 Indian fishermen from Rameswaram, Nagapattinam, Thoothukudi and Pudukottai districts of Tamil Nadu, besides Karaikal in Puducherry and seized 68 Indian fishing boats for poaching in Sri Lankan waters, so far this year and subsequently handed them over to authorities for legal proceedings, the statement added...////...
