Rameswaram (Tamil Nadu), Nov 10 (Reporter) The Sri Lankan Navy arrested 23 fishermen hailing from this island town in Ramanathapuram district of Tamil Nadu and confiscated their three mechanized fishing trawlers allegedly for poaching in its territorial waters on Sunday. Tamil Nadu Fisheries department officials said here that the fishermen were arrested when they were allegedly fishing on high seas close to the Delft Island of Sri Lanka. The seized boats together with Indian fishermen were taken to the Kankesanthurai Harbour and handed over to the Mailadi Fisheries officials for onward legal proceedings. Subsequently, the incarcerated fishermen were remanded to judicial custody by a Sri Lankan court and lodged in Jaffna prison. The Sri Lankan Navy has apprehended 485 fishermen from Rameswaram, Nagapattinam, Thoothukudi and Pudukottai districts of Tamil Nadu and seized 65 Indian fishing boats so far this year and initiated legal proceedings against them...////...
