Colombo, Apr 16 (Reporter) Sri Lankan police have taken legal action against 800 individuals for driving under the influence of alcohol within a 48-hour period ending at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, as part of special operations conducted during the country's festive season.
Police spokesman K.B. Manathunga told local media that the police will continue these operations in the coming days to apprehend drunk drivers.
Manathunga also noted that police have launched a broader operation aimed at reducing road accidents, anticipating a surge in traffic over the next few days.
Sri Lanka's Sinhala and Tamil New Year falls on April 14 this year. According to Manathunga, on April 13 and 14 alone, at least five fatal accidents occurred each day, while an average of ten people sustained serious injuries daily.
He warned that the number of road accidents is likely to rise as people who traveled to their hometowns for the holiday begin returning to Colombo.
