Chennai, Aug 7 (Reporter) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced a solatium of Rs 10 lakh to the family of a fisherman, who continue to remain missing after he fell into sea following a boat collision in mid sea on August one.
Even as the search operations by the Indian Coast Guard and other agencies are continuing since then, his body was to be found.
An official release said four fishermen--Mookaiah (54), Muthu Muniyandi (57), Malaisamy (59) and Ramachandran (74) from Rameswaram fishing harbour in Ramanathapuram district, ventured out
for fishing in a boat in the early hours of August one.
While they were fishing near Neduntheevu, a Sri Lankan Navy patrol boat collided with their mechanised boat, following which Malaisamy and Ramachandran fell into the sea.
While Malaichamy got drowned, Ramachandran went missing and search operations were launched to trace him. Two others were rescued from the boat and the Lankan Navy arrested and took them to the Island Nation along with the body of Malaisamy.
Later, on the efforts of Mr Stalin, who took up the matter with the External Affairs Minister, the Indian Embassy in Colombo initiated necessary steps and the two fishermen--Mookaiah and Muthu
Muniyandi--were released and repatriated to India along with the mortal remains of Malaisamy on August 3.
Taking into account the family background of Ramachandran, Mr Stalin announced an assistance of Rs 10 lakh to his family from the Chief Minister's Public Relief Fund .
Meanwhile, another release said a delegation from Tamil Nadu met External Affairs Minister Dr.S.Jaishankar in New Delhi on Tuesday and urged him to take steps to release Tamil Nadu
fishermen who were in Sri Lankan custody.
The delegation, led by Thoothukudi Lok Sabha MP and Senior DMK leader Kanimozhi, also
consisted of Tamil Nadu Minister of Fisheries and Fishermen Welfare Anitha R. Radhakrishnan, Nilgiris DMK MP A. Raja, and IUML Ramanathapuram MP Navas Kani.
Representatives of various fishermen associations were also part of the delegation, it said...////...
