Chennai, Dec 3 (Reporter) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Tuesday announced various
relief measures for the people in Cyclone Fengal hit districts, including Rs 2,000 to all the
cardholders in three districts and an assistance of Rs five lakh each to the families of those
killed in the rain fury.
An official release said, Mr Stalin announced the relief after reviewing the relief measures
being underway in the worst hit Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Tiruvannamalai, Cuddalore,
Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts with higher officials and with the District Collectors
via video-conferencing from the State Secretariat.
He said Rs 2,000 would be to the families of all cardholders in Villupuram, Cuddalore
and Kallakurichi districts whose livelihood were affected due to unprecedented rains.
Announcing the decisions taken after the meeting, Mr Stalin said Rs five lakh each would
also be given as compensation to the families of those killed in Cyclone.
It may be recalled that the Chief Minister in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking
Rs 2,000 crore interim relief for Cyclone restoration works, had said that 12 people had died
in Cyclone-related incidents, including seven members of family, whose house were buried
in a landslide in Tiruvannamalai district.
He also announced Rs five lakh each to their family members in a separate statement, while
expressing deep anguish over the Tiruvannamalai tragedy.
In the letter, he said the catastrophic event has resulted in loss of 12 human lives, 2,416 huts,
721 houses and 963 cattle, inundation of 2,11,139 hectares of agricultural and horticultural land,
damage to 9,576 km of roads, 1,847 culverts and 417 tanks, destruction of 1,649 km of electric
conductors, 23,664 electric poles and 997 transformers, severe impairment of 1,650 Panchayat
buildings, 4,269 Anganwadi Centers, 205 Primary Health Centers, 5,936 school buildings, 381
community halls and 623 water supply schemes, he pointed out.
