Stalin announces solatium for two TN drivers died in Kar landslide, floods

Chennai, July 25 (Reporter) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Thursday announced a solatium of Rs three lakh each to the families of two drivers from the State, who were washed away in floods triggered by a landslip in North Kannada district of Karnataka on July 16. An official release here said the Chief Minister expressed deep sorrow and anguish over the deaths of two drivers, Chinnanan of Namakkal district and Murugan of Krishnagiri district, and announced the solatium from the Chief Minister's Public Relief Fund. The two drivers were driving LPG tanker lorries when they were trapped in the landslide triggered by heavy rains in North Kannada district and were washed away in floods. Mr Stalin also expressed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. Their bodies were traced and handed over to their family members. Meanwhile, reports received here said a search was on for another driver Saravanan of Namakkal district, who was reported missing in the tragedy. Though Namakkal District Collector Uma said the lower part of a body was recovered after nearly ten days after a prolonged search as the officials found it difficult to reach the spot, DNA samples were sent to the labs to confirm whether it was the body of Saravanan. The district administration also collected DNA samples from his family to ascertain his identity. "Only after receipt of the lab reports, it can be confirmed whether the lower body of the victim recovered was Saravanan or not", she said, while promising all assistance to his grieving family, who were yet to know about his whereabouts.
