Stalin announces USD one mn prize to decipher Indus Script

Chennai, Jan 5 (Reporter) In a major announcement marking the century of the discovery of the ancient Indus Valley Civilisation, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Sunday said a prize of USD one million would be given for deciphering the Indus script. Mr Stalin also announced a Rs 2 crore grant for instituting a Chair in honour of Iravatham Mahadevan for IVC research to be carried out jointly by the State Archaeology Department and the Indus Research Centre of the Chennai-based Roja Muthiah Library. Inaugurating the three-day day International Conference commemorating the centenary year of the announcement of the discovery of the Indus Valley Civilization (IVC) by Sir John Marshall at the Egmore Museum Theatre here, he said IVC, which flourished once, was indeed a Tamil civilisation and has several similarities with the Tamil culture. Since its discovery, the IVC writing system has remained an enigma, he said. Mr Stalin said over the past 100 years, numerous Indus sites have been excavated in the sub-continent. "But 100 years after the discovery of the IVC the script is yet to be deciphered for everyone to understand, though consistent efforts were made by Tamil software professionals across the world", he said...////...
