Stalin says Varsity sexual assault accused not DMK man, promises stern action

Chennai, Jan 8 (Reporter) In his first reaction to the recent alleged sexual assault incident at the State-run Anna University, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Wednesday told the State Assembly that the arrested accused in the case was not a member of the ruling DMK party. Replying to a Special Calling Attention motion given notice of by members of various political parties, including Leader of the Opposition Edappadi K Palaniswami of AIADMK, the Chief Minister promised stern actin against the accused. He said the arrested accused, Gnanasekaran (37), who runs a biriyani outlet on the roadside, hd only taken photographs with a couple of Ministers. He was not at all a member of the DMK, Mr Stalin clarified. "Even if he was a member of the DMK, though actually it is not so, stringent action will be taken and punishment awarded ti him", he added. On the Opposition's oft-repeated claims that the accused spoke to a person over phone and addressed him as 'Sir' at the time of the incident, the Chief Minister said "Whoever is that 'Sir', whatever be his background, action will be taken". Mr Stalin also said the chargesheet in the case will be filed within 60 days and the accused was punished.
