Chennai, Oct 3 (Reporter) A week after meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and submitting
a memorandum seeking Centre's sanction for the Phase-2 of the Chennai Metro Rail Project,
the Union Cabinet on Thursday evening accorded the approval and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister
M K Stalin thanked Mr Modi for the same and promised that the project would be completed
at the earliest.
The Union Cabinet approved the 118 km long second phase project involving Rs 63,246 crores
taking into account that Chennai was a fast growing economy and it would further drastically ease
the traffic snarls in this teeming megapolis and offer hassle-free travel for the people.
In a social media post, immediately after Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the
Cabinet's decision granting approval for the project, Mr Stalin said "Thank you, Hon'ble PM
@narendramodi, for accepting our request during my last meeting with you and approving
the second phase of the Chennai Metro Rail Project."
"This long pending demand of the people of Tamil Nadu having been addressed now, we
are confident of completing the project at the earliest !", he added.
Earlier, after a meeting with Mr Modi at New Delhi on September 27, Mr Stalin posted "had
a cordial meeting with Hon’ble Prime Minister Thiru. @narendramodi, where I discussed key
issues concerning Tamil Nadu".
"Requested the release of the Union Government’s share for Phase 2 of the jointly implemented Chennai Metro, noting that several states which initiated their metro projects after Tamil Nadu have already received their funds."
"Looking forward to swift and positive action from the Prime Minister on for the benefit of Tamil
Nadu", he said.
The Centre has now accepted the project and announced allocation funds for it...////...
