Stalin writes to EAM on fishermen issue

Chennai, Nov 12 (Reporter) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Tuesday wrote to External Affairs Minister (EAM) Dr. S. Jaishankar requesting him to take immediate diplomatic efforts to prevent the arrests of fishermen and to secure their expeditious release and their fishing boats. In a Demi-Official letter to Dr Jaishankar, he drew his attention to the increased frequency of incidents of arrest of Indian fishermen by the Sri Lankan authorities. These arrests not only disrupt their livelihoods but also cause immense distress to their families. Mr Stalin said on November 9, the Sri Lankan Navy took into custody 23 fishermen from Rameswaram, two mechanized fishing boats and an unregistered boat. Further, another fishing boat from Nagapattinam and 12 fishermen were apprehended. Notably, the Sri Lankan Navy's apprehension of Tamil Nadu fishermen in 2024 is the highest in the last seven years.
